When asked what the Mediterranean means to you, everyone’s answer will be different, and yet a reminder of a shared identity. The music and food that can immediately evoke fond memories. Sitting in the shade of an olive tree or looking out across any of the many unique skylines in a moment of peace and connection with nature. Transcending cultures and generations, the possibilities are endless.

In anticipation of the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, a landmark Euro-Mediterranean initiative to bring the region’s countries together to address common challenges, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) gathered more than 120 institutional and civil society actors as well as senior officials from the organisation’s 43 Member States over three days to provide inputs on how to strengthen regional cooperation with a view to redefining it for the years to come.

تتمتع المنطقة الأورومتوسطية بتراث ثري ومتنوع، شكلته قرون من التبادل الثقافي، وتعتبر بمثابة بوتقة تنصهر فيها اللغات والتقاليد المختلفة، وتشترك في تراث وشعور عميق بالهوية والانتماء. واليوم، لا يزال هذا الإرث يلهم قيمنا وتطلعاتنا المشتركة، ويذكرنا بأهمية بناء الجسور وتعزيز التفاهم بين الثقافات.

وبهذه الروح، أطلقت الدول الأعضاء الـ 43 في الاتحاد من أجل المتوسط مبادرة “العواصم المتوسطية للثقافة والحوار” خلال المنتدى الإقليمي السابع في نوفمبر 2022.

بناءً على دعوة وزراء الثقافة في المنطقةالأورومتوسطي الأورومتوسطية في 17 يونيو 2022 في نابولي، وكذلك توصية أكثر من 200 ممثل شاب من المجتمع المدني لأكثر من 20 دولة منتدى العالم المتوسطي في فبراير 2022 بمرسيليا، تم إنشاء هذه المبادرة لمواصلة تعزيز التنوع والهوية المشتركة والمساهمة في زيادة الفهم المتبادل لشعوبها.

تم تطوير هذه المبادرة بالشراكة مع ممثلي المجتمع المدني الشباب والدول الأعضاء في الاتحاد من أجل المتوسط.

La région euro-méditerranéenne s’enorgueillit d’un patrimoine riche et diversifié, façonné par des siècles d’échanges culturels. Creuset de langues et de traditions diverses, la région partage un héritage et un profond sentiment d’identité et d’appartenance. Aujourd’hui, cet héritage continue d’inspirer nos valeurs et aspirations communes, nous rappelant l’importance de construire des ponts et de favoriser la compréhension entre les cultures.

C’est dans cet esprit que les 43 États membres de l’Union pour la Méditerranée ont lancé les « Capitales méditerranéennes de la culture et du dialogue » lors de leur 7e Forum régional en novembre 2022.

Basée sur l’appel des ministres de la Culture de la région euro-méditerranéenne le 17 juin 2022 à Naples, ainsi que sur la recommandation de plus de 200 jeunes représentants de la société civile de plus de 20 pays lors du Forum des Mondes Méditerranéens en février 2022 à Marseille, cette initiative a été conçue pour promouvoir davantage la diversité et l’identité partagée et contribuer à une meilleure compréhension mutuelle de ses peuples.

Cette initiative a été développée en partenariat avec des jeunes représentants de la société civile et des États membres de l’UpM.

The Euro-Mediterranean region boasts a rich and diverse heritage, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange. A melting pot of different languages and traditions, the region shares a heritage and a deep sense of identity and belonging. Today, this legacy continues to inspire our shared values and aspirations, reminding us of the importance of building bridges and fostering understanding between cultures.

In that spirit, the 43 Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean launched the “Mediterranean Capitals of Culture & Dialogue” during their 7th Regional Forum in November 2022.

Based on the call of Ministers of Culture of the Euro-Mediterranean region on 17 June 2022 in Naples, as well as the recommendation of more than 200 young representatives from the civil society of over 20 countries at the Forum des Mondes Méditerranéens on February 2022 in Marseille, this initiative was shaped to further promote the diversity and shared identity and contribute to a better mutual understanding of its peoples.

This initiative was developed in partnership with young civil society representatives and UfM member states.
