The Mediterranean, a journey through the senses

When asked what the Mediterranean means to you, everyone’s answer will be different, and yet a reminder of a shared identity. The music and food that can immediately evoke fond memories. Sitting in the shade of an olive tree or looking out across any of the many unique skylines in a moment of peace and connection with nature. Transcending cultures and generations, the possibilities are endless.

Originaire de Rabat, sur la rive sud de la Méditerranée, Kamilia a grandi dans un environnement où l’identité méditerranéenne n’était pas un concept abstrait, mais une réalité quotidienne. Dans sa famille, les langues, les cultures et l’ouverture à l’autre faisaient partie intégrante de l’éducation. L’apprentissage de l’espagnol, très tôt, s’est imposé comme une évidence. Cette familiarité avec l’altérité et ce sentiment d’appartenance à un espace commun ont progressivement façonné son regard sur le monde et orienté ses choix académiques.

28 November 2025, 8 p.m., Petit Palau, Barcelona. This year, Mediterranean Day takes on a special dimension as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process. Three decades later, Barcelona once again becomes a meeting point to reaffirm the Mediterranean as a shared space and a bridge of understanding between its shores. The commemoration highlights the power of music and poetry to weave bonds and open dialogues, always looking towards a fairer and more peaceful future for the whole region.

Framed within the 10th Regional Forum of the Union for the Mediterranean and its side events, the concert will feature the renowned Barcelona-born flamenco singer Mayte Martín, who will perform Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo —considered the composer’s masterpiece— together with the Camerata Penedès under the direction of Elena Rey. They will be joined by musician Gani Mirzo and actress Manar Taljo.

ARTISTS
Mayte Martín Mayte Martín is a renowned flamenco singer, composer and guitarist from Barcelona. Considered one of the great voices of contemporary flamenco, her artistic career is characterised by sensitivity, expressive purity and creative freedom. With several albums released and a career spanning back to the late nineteen-eighties, she has explored various genres without ever abandoning her essence.

La Camerata Penedès
It is one of the leading orchestras in Catalonia, based at the Municipal Auditorium of Vilafranca del Penedès and with a reach that extends throughout the territory. It is made up of young musicians trained in prestigious European conservatoires.

Gani Mirzo
He is a renowned Kurdish musician from Qamishlo (north-eastern Syria). Trained at the Aleppo Conservatoire, where he taught oud and composition, he settled in Barcelona in 1993, where he delved into flamenco at the Liceu Conservatoire, where he is currently a professor and heads the Department of Oriental Music (Ziryab) of the Barcelona School of Music.

22–28 November, Barcelona. Thirty years ago, the Barcelona Process laid the foundations for a new era of dialogue and cooperation across the Mediterranean. Rooted in the shared values of peace, stability and prosperity, it marked a historic commitment to multilateralism as the most effective way to address common challenges.

In commemoration of this landmark anniversary, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will convene the 10th UfM Regional Forum under the claim “Together for a Stronger Euro-Mediterranean Partnership”.

This year’s Forum will not only reflect on the legacy of the Barcelona Process but also issue a call for renewed commitment to regional cooperation and solidarity in the face of today’s pressing challenges.

The Forum will bring together Ministers of Foreign Affairs and a wide range of actors across numerous side events — including representatives of civil society, local authorities, regional governments and regional organisations — to engage in dialogue on how to collectively build a more resilient and prosperous Mediterranean. Discussions will focus on coordinated responses to shared priorities, from climate change and socio-economic disparities to peace and security in the region.

The Forum will also provide an opportunity to reflect on the UfM’s role in promoting tangible cooperation and to look ahead. Discussions will be anchored in the endorsement of a new strategic vision for the UfM, as well as the EU’s New Pact for the Mediterranean, reaffirming the region’s commitment to working together through a strengthened and coordinated multilateral framework.

As we mark 30 years since the launch of the Barcelona Process, the UfM Regional Forum will stand as a forward-looking platform for collective action — building bridges, fostering understanding, and shaping a stronger Euro-Mediterranean partnership for generations to come.
