29 September – 2 October 2025, Tirana – The city of Tirana, Albania, hosted the 2nd edition of the UfM Med Youth Lab, where 58 young leaders from 14 Euro-Mediterranean countries came together to exchange, connect and co-create solutions for a more inclusive, sustainable and united region.

The event was organised by the UfM with the support of German Development Cooperation (GIZ), in partnership with Anna Lindh Foundation, European Institute of the Mediterranean , and Euro-Mediterranean University of Fes and with the support of the Albanian Ministry of State for Youth and Children and the National Youth Agency of Albania.

Building on the success of the first edition in Fes (2024), this year’s Lab once again proved the power of youth to drive dialogue and cooperation across the Mediterranean.

12 September 2025, Barcelona. The 2nd UfM report on the state of economic integration in the Euro-Mediterranean region, developed in partnership with the OECD with the support of the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), was presented today at Barcelona’s Palau Reial palace. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, it builds on the previous edition and provides key findings and policy recommendations in five domains: trade, finance, infrastructure, movement of people, and higher education and research. The launching ceremony of the report also brought together representatives of different regional integration processes and stakeholders to showcase best practices that can be adapted and replicated in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The UfM and the road to a sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean

The Euro-Mediterranean region boasts a rich and diverse heritage, shaped by centuries of cultural exchange. A melting pot of different languages and traditions, the region shares a heritage and a deep sense of identity and belonging. Today, this legacy continues to inspire our shared values and aspirations, reminding us of the importance of building bridges and fostering understanding between cultures.
In that spirit, the 43 Member States of the Union for the Mediterranean launched the “Mediterranean Capitals of Culture & Dialogue” during their 7th Regional Forum in November 2022.
Based on the call of Ministers of Culture of the Euro-Mediterranean region on 17 June 2022 in Naples, as well as the recommendation of more than 200 young representatives from the civil society of over 20 countries at the Forum des Mondes Méditerranéens on February 2022 in Marseille, this initiative was shaped to further promote the diversity and shared identity and contribute to a better mutual understanding of its peoples.
This initiative was developed in partnership with young civil society representatives and UfM member states.

Info session – Call for Applications: 2027 Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue

In June 2024, a programme meeting in Spain consolidated the outcomes of the four national workshops. Participants discussed the implementation of officially certified training programmes in traditional building techniques, as well as broader cultural and economic opportunities, including the role of oases in driving economic development in North Africa’s inland regions and the historical Salt Caravan Route as a potential sustainable tourism destination.

One of the key takeaways from the final meeting was the need to establish nationally certified training programmes in traditional construction skills, integrating them into formal education systems. Countries such as France, Germany, and Switzerland provide successful models that could be adapted to national contexts in the Maghreb.

To build on these discussions, a first field visit was organised in Marseille, France, in November 2024 and in March 2025. The French city was chosen for its exemplary institutions on cultural preservation, vocational training, and social inclusion.

The visit provided participants with an in-depth understanding of the institutional, legal, educational, logistical, and financial frameworks required to establish nationally certified schools of traditional building skills.
