This year marks 30 years of the Barcelona Process – three decades of efforts to build a shared, peaceful, and resilient Mediterranean.
But dialogue is not something that only happens between governments.
It happens every day – in streets, cafés, homes, classrooms, coastlines and inboxes. And as the region changes, so must the conversation.
So, this year we are bringing the dialogue back to the people.
“We need to talk, Mediterranean” is an open invitation to reflect on what we share, what we hope for, and how we can shape the future – together.
It is about:
- Dialogue between people: across borders, identities, and perspectives
- Dialogue with ourselves: through reflection, memory, and legacy
- Dialogue with the future: imagining what kind of Mediterranean we want to pass on
From youth-led videos and street interviews to shared moments of cultural expression, this year’s campaign is all about connection.
How to get involved
In the lead-up to 28 November, we will be sharing stories, videos, and testimonies from across the region.
Here is how you can take part:
- Follow us on our social media platforms: @UfMSecretariat
- Write a message to yourself, to a friend, or to your neighbours – close and far – about your hopes for the future, your aspirations, and your dreams for the Mediterranean.
- Use #MediterraneanDay to join the conversation
Watch out for the “Message in a Bottle” creator series on Instagram, featuring voices from both shores of the Mediterranean
Why now?
This is more than an anniversary. It is a moment to reimagine dialogue – not as a formal process, but as something living and human.
Because the Mediterranean does not speak with one voice.
It speaks in many.
And it is time to hear them.
