On the Day of the Mediterranean, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) hosted a webinar on “Coastal cities and climate mobility in the Mediterranean” bringing together over 100 participants from across the region and beyond.

We are deeply grateful to our keynote speaker Ashok ...Adicéam and to our panelists Martin Heibel, Ines Duarte, Juliette Samman and Youssef Aroog for their thoughtful and engaging contributions.

The webinar explored the role of regional cooperation and programmes, the importance of evidence and community knowledge to inform action, and the need to empower youth and local actors to shape solutions in and for their cities.

The key takeaways from the discussion included:

- Climate mobility in Mediterranean coastal areas is shaped by an interplay of socioeconomic, climatic and sociocultural factors – including gendered dynamics – rather than by climate risks alone.

- Coastal cities need integrated support ecosystems, combining funding, technical assistance, data and tools, and peer-to-peer learning to design and implement effective resilience and adaptation measures.

- Regional cooperation is essential to address shared challenges such as sea-level rise and ocean health, connect local action to multilateral processes, and ensure that coastal territories have a voice in global forums.

- Youth and communities are key actors, not just beneficiaries; empowering them to lead and co-create solutions is central to building fair and inclusive responses to climate mobility.

This discussion was a timely reminder that climate resilience, human mobility and urban futures in the region are deeply interconnected, and that addressing them requires joined-up, cross-Mediterranean collaboration.
